10 Must Haves for Accessible Online Services

Learn effective tools to set up accessible online services that are ADA, 508, and WCAG 2.1 compliant.

Did you know that you can be fined up to $75,000 for your first ADA violation and $150,000 for any subsequent violation? To learn more about your State’s laws regarding accessible online services, click here.

As of June 2018, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 are in effect, representing the most up-to-date standards for developing accessible online content. Compliance is measured on the basis of whether a website is Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust. To learn more about key terms in web accessibility for government, check out this post: Web Accessibility Explained for a Government Audience.

Based on WCAG 2.1, we've compiled 10 must haves to help you set up accessible online forms and applications.

10 Must Haves to Set Up Accessible Online Services

  1. Allow end users to modify the form’s content to accommodate their needs, including large print, speech, simpler language, etc.
  2. Allow content to be presented in different ways, such as simpler layout, without losing information.
  3. Make it easier for users to see content, such as separating foreground from background.
  4. Make all functionality available from a keyboard, including form submission and form management post-submission.
  5. Provide ways to help users navigate the forms.
  6. Make content readable and understandable.
  7. Make forms appear and operate in predictable ways.
  8. Help users avoid and correct mistakes when they fill out forms.
  9. Do not design form content in a way that is known to cause seizures.
  10. Maximize compatibility with current and future user agents, including assistive technologies.
